My story
Clarence Evendale Burr was the son of Martha and Wesley Burr. He was born around 1888 in Devonport, Tasmania, Australia. He continued to live there and worked as a labourer. In February 1916, Clarence enlisted in the Australian Army. He joined the 12th Battalion (3rd Brigade, 1st Division).
Clarence died on 10 October 1917 from wounds received in action the day before. On 9 October, the Battle of Poelkapelle, part of the Battle of Passchendaele, took place. The 10th Battalion, which had relieved the 12th Battalion two days earlier, attacked Celtic Copse near Broodseinde Ridge. In doing so, they encountered much resistance and suffered heavy losses. The retreat was also difficult and there was shelling throughout the day. During the attack of 9 October the 12th Battalion was in the supporting lines. Clarence was serving as stretcher bearer at the time. A fellow stretcher bearer, Private W. Nichols, was wounded and Clarence tried to evacuate him while the 3rd Brigade was being relieved. However, a sniper hit him, resulting in a wound to his left thigh and a fractured right fremur. Clarence was able to be evacuated and was transferred to No. 3 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station near Poperinge.
Clarence died of his injuries at the hospital on 10 October 1917. He was buried nearby in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery (plot XXI, row D, grave 6).
