My story
Lambert David Frederick Elliott was the son of Martha and John Henry Elliott. He was born around 1890 in Trentham, Victoria, Australia. Lambert continued to live at that town and worked as an electrician. In October 1916, he enlisted in the Australian Army and joined the 22nd Battalion (6th Brigade, 2nd Division).
Lambert was killed on 3 October 1917, while preparing for the Battle of Broodseinde, part of the Battle of Passchendaele. His company was occupying a trench near Broodseinde at the time. A group, of which Lambert was a member, was building a dugout in that trench. As Lambert stood on the top of the trench, a high-explosive shell exploded nearby. Lambert was killed instantly.
It is not clear where 27-year-old Lambert was buried, but his body was not recovered or identified after the war. His name is commemorated on the Menin Gate.
