My story
Arthur Rawlinson Baker was born on October 8, 1895, in Liverpool, England. He was the son of James Gibson Baker and Rachel Baker. He enlisted in Liverpool and was initially assigned to the King's Regiment (Liverpool). He was later transferred to the 2nd/8th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers. In February 1918, he found himself with his battalion in the Broodseinde area.
On February 3, 1918, the 2nd/8th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers took over the front line at Broodseinde from the 2/10th Battalion, Manchester Regiment. During the days in the front line, several patrols and tasks were carried out. Additionally, they encountered gas shells and bombardments.
On February 8, the relief was scheduled. The New Zealanders of the 1st Battalion, Auckland Infantry Regiment were to take over the front line, and the men of the Lancashire Fusiliers were to return to Vancouver Camp near Reningelst. However, during the relief, fate struck for Arthur. A shell hit and wounded Second Lieutenant Williams in the head, but it killed Arthur. He was 22 when he fell.
Sergeant Arthur Rawlinson Baker was reburied after the war at Tyne Cot Cemetery, plot XXXIX, row H, grave 24.
