My story

Arthur Rawlinson Baker was born on 8 October 1895 in Liverpool, England. He was the son of James Gibson Baker and Rachel Baker. He enlisted in Liverpool and was initially assigned to the King's Regiment (Liverpool). Later, he was transferred to the 2nd/8th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers. In February 1918, he and his battalion were stationed in the Broodseinde region.

Arthur Rawlinson Baker was killed in action at the age of 22 on 8 February 1918.

On 3 February 1918, the 2nd/8th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers took over the frontline at Broodseinde from the 2/10th Battalion, Manchester Regiment. During their time at the frontline, various patrols and work duties were carried out. They also endured gas shelling and bombardments.

On 8 February, the relief operation was scheduled. The New Zealanders from the 1st Battalion, Auckland Infantry Regiment were to take over the frontline, and the men of the Lancashire Fusiliers would return to Vancouver Camp near Reningelst. However, during the relief, tragedy struck Arthur. A shell exploded, wounding Second Lieutenant Williams in the head and killing Arthur. He was 22 years old when he fell.

The body of sergeant Arthur Rawlinson Baker was found after the war near the Broodseinde crossroads and reburied at Tyne Cot Cemetery, Plot XXXIX, Row H, Grave 24.
