My story

Duncan Harper was the son of Mary and Gilbert Harper. He was born around 1888 in Baillieston, Lanarkshire. Before the war, he lived in Blantyre, Lanarkshire. Duncan enlisted in the British Army at Hamilton. He belonged to the B Battery of the 86th Army Brigade Royal Field Artillery.

Duncan Harper was killed on 7 September 1917 at the Battle of Passchendaele. On the night of 6-7 September and the night of 7-8 September, Duncan's unit relieved the 14th Australian Field Artillery Brigade. They started their journey from their wagon lines near Dikkebus, between today's Oude Bellestraat and Kerkstraat. At the time, that Australian brigade was in the lines near the Ypres ramparts, along the present Hoornwerk and Leopold III avenue. Not only did the troops of the 86th Army Brigade move towards the lines in Ypres, but their guns also moved with them. The guns used by the Australian brigade then had to be moved back towards the wagon lines near Dikkebus.

Exactly how or when 29-year-old Duncan Harper was killed is not clear, but he reportedly died of wounds. Duncan found his final resting place at Bedford House Cemetery in Ypres (Enclosure No.4 II. D. 7.).
