My story
Reginald Beale, a former farmer, was born on December 10th, 1889, in London, England, as the son of Robert and Alice Inkpen Beale. On January 3rd, 1916, he enlisted at Welland, Ontario, Canada, and served as a Private in the 21st Canadian Infantry Battalion, part of the 4th Canadian Infantry Brigade of the 2nd Canadian Division.
On the night of November 2nd to 3rd, 1917, the 2nd Canadian Division relieved the 4th Canadian Division from the frontline. The 21st Battalion was positioned on the left of their brigade’s sector, near Crest Farm. The brigade was then relieved the night of November 4th to 5th by the 5th and 6th Canadian Infantry Brigades. While holding the frontline, the battalion had to repel German forces who had entered their trenches northeast of Crest Farm, as well as several enemy attacks on the morning of the 3rd, which forced a temporary withdrawal of 45 yards. They quickly regained the line. By the time they were relieved, 44 men had been killed.
Reginald, aged 28, was killed in action during this frontline period. Private Reginald Beale is buried at Tyne Cot Cemetery, Plot I, Row D, Grave 15.
