My story

Henry George Sheerman was the son of Emily and Henry Alexander Sheerman. He was born on 30 May 1886 in Richmond, Surrey. Together with his wife Marjorie he lived in Aldershot, Hampshire. Before the war he worked as a baker. Henry was part of the 20th Battalion Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) (19th Brigade, 33rd Division).

Henry was killed in action on 28 November 1917 in the aftermath of the Battle of Passchendaele. On 27 and 28 November, Henry’s unit relieved the 1/5th Scottish Rifles in the front area south of Passchendaele. On 28 November, a heavy German barrage killed 51 men of the 20th Battalion Royal Fusiliers.

Henry died at the age of 28 near Tiber, Passchendaele. He is buried at Tyne Cot Cemetery.
