My story

Private George Frederick Swainson served in the East Yorkshire Regiment 1st/4th Battalion, which was part of the 150th Brigade, of the 50th (Northumbrian) Division.

On the 11th of December 1917 the 1st/4th Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment prepared for the line. They left for the front at 3.15 p.m. and were to relieve the Middlesex Regiment 1st Battalion, who was lying in support at Daring Crossing and Seine, North of Zonnebeke. The relieve was completed at 8.30 p.m.

The next day the 1st/4th Battalion went into the frontline near Crest Farm, Southwest of Passchendaele, where they relieved Argylle & Sutherland Regiment 2nd Battalion. Battalion Headquarters were positioned at Hamburg. On the 14th of December 1917 ā€Dā€ Company moved from Crest Farm to positions along the Passchendaele Road. On the 15th of December the Battalion suffered a total of thirteen casualties. Ten men were wounded and three men were killed in action. The Battalion was relieved on the next day.

Private George Frederick Swainson was killed on the 16th of December 1917. His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
