My story

Private Sidney Herbert Passmore was part of the 1st Battalion London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers), but was attached to the 2/3rd Battalion London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers), 173rd Brigade, 58th (2/1st London) Division. His battalion took part in the Second Battle of Passchendaele on 26 October 1917. The 58th Division attacked at 5.40 a.m. with the 173rd Brigade. The 2/2nd and the 2/3rd London Regiment attacked with the 2/4th London in support and the 2/1st in reserve. The 2/3rd advanced to Spider Cross Roads, their first objective, where they came under heavy machine-gun fire. Here they came to a halt. Between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. the Germans counterattacked on the left flank. The 57th Division to their left was held up, leaving Spider Crossroads exposed. The Germans pushed the British attackers back. At the same time another German counterattack from the sunken road between Papa Farm and Whitechapel pushed the division back to its jump offline. The war diary states that on the evening of the 26th of october, 4 officers and approximately 224 other ranks were counted (not casualties) out of a total of 15 officers and 616 other ranks (strength report on the 24th of October). It's most likely that Private Sidney Herbert Passmore was killed during the retreat from Spider Crossroads to the original jump off line near Requete Farm, north east of Poelcapelle.
