My story
Sidney Howard Motion, a former medicine student, was born on 20 March 1895 in Sutton, Surrey, England. During his studies he joined the OTC course at Marlborough College, later being gazetted as a lieutenant in September 1914. He served in France from 1 September 1915 in the 7th Bn. Northamptonshire Regiment, part of the 73rd Brigade, of the 24th Division. After being wounded in August 1916, he re-joined the battalion in May 1917.
On the 31st of July 1917 the division moved into the line at Mount Sorrel, forming up with the 73rd Brigade in the centre. At 3:50 a.m. they attacked through Shrewsbury Forest and reached Jehovah Trench. After the capture, the men continued on but were stopped at Lower Star Post. They were unable to take out this strongpoint and had to retreated to Jehovah Trench.
Sidney Howard Motion, aged 22, was died of wounds on August 1st, 1917. He was wounded during the advance and died at an Advanced Dressing Station. Lieutenant Motion is buried at Brandhoek New Military Cemetery, plot I, row B, grave 11.
