My story
Lance Corporal Joseph Robert Hartley, a professional soldier, served in the 214th Machine Gun Company, which was part of the 58th Division.
On the 24th of October the 214th Machine Gun Company moved to Seige Camp, arriving in the late afternoon. On the same day orders were issued to send 8 machine gun batteries to the front line near Poelcapelle on the 25th. The 173rd Brigade was preparing to attack on the 26th October and the machine guns of the 214th MG Company had to support this attack. This battle would later be known as the Second Battle of Passchendaele.
The War Diary states that one man was killed on the 25th of October and 5 others wounded. It’s likely that the soldier killed was Lance Corporal Joseph Robert Hartley. He most likely died while holding the line near Poelcapelle. His grave was not identified after the war.
