My story
John Halbert was a 20-year-old private of the Machine Gun Corps 165th Company, part of the 165th Liverpool brigade, of the 55th (West Lancashire) Division. On 20 September 1917, the Company had established some strongpoints in the Pommern Castle area. Guns were positioned at Tullip Cottage, Hill 37, Delva Farm, Irma, Capitol, Kaynorth, Gallipoli, Cabbage Cottage, Hill 35.
During the afternoon of the 22nd of September 1917, German movement was noticed. To protect the left flank; one gun was moved forward to Gallipoli Copse. Another gun was moved forward from Irma to the east of Delta Farm.
John’s Company was relieved on the 24th of September. During these couple of days in the frontlines, the company had been subjected to frequent German artillery fire. Three officers and ten other ranks were killed, thirty other ranks were wounded. Jon Halbert was one of the thirteen men who were killed while holding the line east of Pommern Castle. John has no known grave and is remembered on panel 157 of the Tyne Cot Memorial.
