My story

Gordon Carpenter, a student from Banff, Alberta was killed on 6 November 1917. The 1st Battalion (Ontario Regiment) went into the front line with 546 men. Just under half, 257, returned unharmed.

At 6 a.m. Gordon's unit attacked the hamlet of Mosselmarkt, north of Passchendaele. The German garrison sheltered in vain in cellars, fleeing the Allied barrage. Most of them were killed by the artillery fire. The enfeebled survivors meekly surrendered.

Shortly after the Canadians reached the final objective, a shell exploded near Gordon. The 20-year-old died instantly. He is buried together with 11 others at the crossroads of the 's Gravenstafelstraat and the Osselstraat. Today Gordon is commemorated on the Menin Gate.
