My story
David Campbell, a former Banker, was born on the 22nd of February 1898 in Glasgow, Scotland. On January 21st, 1916, he enlisted at Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He served as a private in the 72nd Battalion Canadian Infantry (Seaforth Highlanders), part of the 12th Canadian Brigade, of the 4th Canadian Division.
On the 30th of October 1917, the 12th Canadian Brigade attacked with the 85th, 78th and 72nd Battalions Canadian Infantry. The Seaforth Highlanders took the German stronghold at Crest Farm, a key defensive position near Passchendaele. Patrols reached the village but were later pulled back. The German artillery retaliated, causing heavy casualties.
David Campbell, aged 37, was killed in action on 30 October 1917. He was initially buried near Crest Farm at 28.D.12.a.20.80. His remains were not recovered or identified after the war. Private Campbell has no known grave and is remembered on panel 30F of the Menin Gate Memorial.
