My story

Harry Scolnuck a young Ukrainian-Canadian was killed at Passchendaele on 7 November 1917. The young man was from Kamyanets-Podilsky, in western Ukraine. A region that was part of the Russian Empire until the First World War. During the war the Canadian government interned more than 8,500 immigrants. Most of them came from Ukraine, which then partly belonged of Austria-Hungary. Nevertheless, Harry enlisted at the end of 1916.

Barely one year later he is killed. His unit, 24th Battalion (Victoria Rifles), is on the front line south of Passchendaele. Their positions, after the capture of the village on 6 November, are under constant artillery fire. Their losses are enormous.

Harry is buried on the Passchendaele Hillcrest together with 8 comrades. They are all later reported missing. With the help of the 'Names in the Landscape' project, we were able to put the locations of their field graves back on the map.
