My story

John Turk was a private of the Queen’s (Royal West Surrey Regiment) 11th Battalion, 123rd Brigade, 41st Division. After being returned from the Third Battle of Ypres, the Battalion employed on the coast defenses at Fort des Dunes in France from 1 October 1917. On the 11th of October, they marched into the line in the area of Nieuwpoort, Belgium (Map: 12.SW.M.20.). This strategic city was heavily bombed by the enemy. On 12 October, the trench of the 11th Battalion was hit by shelling and wounded four men. Probably, private John Turk was one of them. He was brought to the 34th or 36th Casualty Clearing Station at Zuydcoote, where he died of his wounds on 14 October 1917.
