During military operations in the vinicity of Zillebeke he was in "signallers' dugout"at about 11.00 on the morning of June 17th. 1916. when a shell made a direct hit on his quarters. A fragment of the shell struck him in the head rendering him unconscicious, and he succumbed to his injuries about one and half hours later without having regained consciousness.
