My story

Lance Sergeant Samuel Jerred was a textbook example of the first batch of Patricia’s. He was a thirty-one-year-old estate agent, originally from England, a sportsman and a veteran of the Boer War. Like so many of those first Patricia’s, he did not leave Ypres alive.

Along with more than a hundred comrades, Samuel was buried on the ridge. After the battle, the spot fell into German hands. The ground was churned up time and again by the constant shelling. Field burials were lost. Samuel’s grave can no longer be located.

Samuel’s wife Violet had travelled to England shortly before his death. Instead of seeing Samuel when he went on leave, she received news that her husband had been killed.
