My story
Herbert Le Marie Goodridge was a thirty-seven-year-old former Laundry Carman from Watford, Hertfordshire. In 1908 he married Florence Bushell and had three children. He later enlisted as a gunner at Bedford and joined the 29th Brigade Royal Field Artillery, part of the 4th Division.
During the month of October 1917 the 29th Brigade Royal Field Artillery took up positions on the steenbeek near Langemark. On 14-16 and 27 October hostile artillery was very active on the Steenbeek area. During the month 4 officers were wounded, 13 other ranks killed, 59 wounded, 8 gassed and one missing. Gunner Goodrigde was evacuated to one of the casualty clearing stations at Dozinghem. He died of disease on 28 October 1917, from septicalmis, associated with nepliritis and early bronchitis. He was buried at Dozinghem Military Cemetery, where he is still remembered today.
