My story
Karl Friederich Sommer was born on 2 November 1892 in Hemsbach, Grand Duchy of Baden. He was the son of Friederich and Wilhelmine Sommer. Sommer served as a Kanonier in the 8. Batterie, III. Abteilung, Niedersächsisches Feld-Artillerie-Regiment Nr. 46, part of the 20. Feldartillerie-Brigade, of the 20. Infanterie-Division.
At the end of September 1917, the Niedersächsisches Feld-Artillerie-Regiment Nr. 46 was moved from Sancourt (France) to Meulebeke, Flanders. From here they moved to Passchendaele, staying at Roulers for a few days. They relieved the batteries in the vicinity of Passchendaele in the night of 1/2 October. Mirroring the three infantry regiments in the area, the Feld-Artillerie-Regiment split up into three subgroups: ‘Untergruppe Nord’, ‘Untergruppe Mitte’ and ‘Untergruppe Süd’. This last subgroup consisted of the staff of the III. Abteilung, 7. Batterie, 8. Batterie of F.A.R. 46. aswell as 8. Batterie and 9. Batterie of L.F.H. 221.
‘Untergruppe Süd’ had their headquarters at Kapellenhof (Eddy Farm). On 3 October 1917 they moved their headquarters, however, as they were receiving heavy counter-battery fire. The new headquarters were established near the Ypers-Roulers Railway, close to Osthof (Evasion Farm). The guns of 8. Batterie of F.A.R. 46. were moved to a new position between the Zonnebeke-Passchendaele Road in the north and the Ypers-Roulers Railway in the south. On 4 October 1917 the Niedersächsisches Feld-Artillerie-Regiment Nr. 46 would take part in the Battle of Broodseinde.
Karl Sommer, aged 24, was wounded in action near Passchendaele on October 3, 1917. He was evacuated to a hospital in Ingelmunster, where he succumbed to his wounds on October 12, 1917. His body was transported to Hemsbach, Grand Duchy of Baden, where he was buried on 15 January 1918.
