My story

Alfred Lovell Slinn, a former labourer, was born on 18 August 1893 at Northampton, Northamptonshire, England. He was the son of Lovell Warren Slinn and Mary Ann (Annie) Slinn. On 8 July 1913 be disembarked at Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, having left England at Liverpool. On 20 September 1914 he enlisted at Valcartier, Québec. Alfred Slinn served as a lance corporal in the 15th Battalion Canadian Infantry (48th Highlanders of Canada), part of the 3rd Canadian Brigade, of the 1st Canadian Division. He sailed for England in early October 1914 and landed in France on 15 February 1915.

The 15th Battalion Canadian Infantry went into the line near Zillebeke in the evening of July 10, 1916. The German line ran in front of Hill 60. Both sides shelled each other and there was much sniper activity. The battalion was relieved on 16 July 1916.

Alfred Lovell Slinn, aged 22, was killed in action on 12 12 July 1916. He likely succumbed to his wounds at the Advanced Dressing Stations at Railway Dugouts and Transport Farm. Lance Corporal Slinn is buried at Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm), plot VI, row A, grave 31. He is also remembered on the Grimsby Cenotaph (as Seinn) and the St Andrews Church Memorial (as Slynn).
