Mijn verhaal

Riffleman James Edward Anderson was part of the 12th Battalion Rifle Brigade, 60th Brigade, 20th Division. He took part in the Battle of the Menin Road and more specific the Attack on Eagle Trench on the 20th of September 1917. The 20th Division was to attack with the 60th Brigade on the right and the 59th on the left. There were two objectives. The Red Dotted Line running through Louis Farm-Blue House and t'Goed Ter Vesten Farm, running west to the Railway. The second objective, the Green Line running from seven hundred yards south-east of Red House to t'Goed Ter Vesten Farm, and then becoming one with the Red Dotted Line. The 12th Battalion Rifle Brigade assembled to the right of the frontline and the 6th Bn. Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry on the left. The 6th Bn. K.S.L.I. were in support. At 5.40 a.m. on 20 September the attack was launched. The advance succeeded in taking all but the northern part of Eagle Trench immediately east of Schreiboom crossroads. The barrage was rescheduled and at 6.30 p.m., the attack was re-launched. Eagle Trench fell and was occupied, yet a small portion of the trench (that had to be taken by the 59th Brigade) remained in enemy hands forming a pronounced salient. At 8.30 a.m. a counter attack on Eagle Trench was driven off by small-arms fire.
