Mijn verhaal

Private Harold Blakey served in the Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment), 1st/4th Battalion, part of the 147th Brigade, of the 49th (West Riding) Division.

On the 4th of October 1917 the New Zealand Division captured the high ground at Gravenstafel and Abraham Heights during the Battle of Broodseinde. They were relieved on the following day. The 1st/4th Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment) relieved the 3rd Canterbury and the 3rd Auckland Battalions in the front line near Abraham Heights.

Abraham Heights was heavily shelled throughout the 6th of October 1917 and the Battalion suffered several casualties in the front line. Private Harold Blakey was severely wounded, due to the German shelling and succumbed to his injuries on the same day. Private Harold Blakey was buried in the field near Beecham. His remains were exhumed after the war and were interred in Tyne Cot Cemetery.
