Mijn verhaal
Private Archibald Millar McBride served in the Otago Regiment, 2nd Battalion, part of the New Zealand Division.
In January of 1918 the Otago Regiment was ordered to the front line near Polygon Wood. The left of the line was held by the 8th Company of the 2nd Battalion. It was here that at 1.30 am on the 22nd of January the Germans attempted a raid.
They advanced with approximately 100 men in four parties under cover of a preliminary bombardment. The 2nd Battalion fought them off with bombs, artillery and machine gun barrages. The counter-attack was a success since none of the German parties made it into the trenches and only one managed to pass through the barbed wire.
Private Archibald Millar McBride died in action on the 22nd of January 1918. It is highly possible that he died while partaking in the counter-attack against the German raid. He was buried in Polygon Wood. His remains were exhumed after the war and reinterred at Buttes New British Cemetery, Polygon Wood.
