My story

Henry Abell was born in Stanbridge, Leighton Buzzard, Central Bedfordshire, England. He lived there until he enlisted in the British Army at Luton, England. He enlisted in the 1/6th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment (143rd Brigade, 48th (South Midland) Division).

Henry died at the Battle of Broodseinde. The 48th Division attacked with only one brigade, the 143rd Brigade. The 1/5th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment (143rd Brigade) captured Vale House, but suffered heavy casualties from heavy German machine gun fire. The New Zealanders advanced across the 1/5th Battalion's front and took a line between Albatross Farm and Wellington. However, this caused confusion. The confusion was not resolved until the 1/6th Battalion had taken Winchester Farm and the New Zealanders had taken Albatross Farm. This allowed the 1/5th Battalion to advance towards the Stroombeek.
The 1/6th Battalion took up several positions along the west bank of the Stroombeek. However, as they continued their advance, they came under heavy fire from the heights and the road in front of York Farm. Fighting continued for some time before this battalion took Winchester Farm. Eventually a line was taken up close to Vacher Farm. At 5pm the attack was to be continued with the 5th Gloucesters and the 4th Ox & Bucks Light Infantry, but a heavy rain shower and darkness prevented further advance.

Henry died during this battle, on 4th October 1917. He is buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery (Plot XIII, Row D, Grave 32).
