My story
The evolution of the First World War into trench warfare also led to the construction of a lot of shelters, bunkers and other strongpoints. To eliminate these fortified sites in a quick and efficient manner, the attacking Germans were assisted by Pioneer troops. This separate unit of the German army specialised in the construction and destruction of fortified positions. Moreover, they also helped to overcome natural obstacles such as streams and rivers. They had special weapons such as mine and flame throwers.
Among others, farmer's son Johann Neumeier belonged to those Pioneer troops. The young German man was born on 27 December 1896 in Schwarzau, Germany, the son of Alois and Karoline Neumeier. During the First World War, he was part of the 3. Bayerische Reserve-Pionier-Kompagnie.
On 16 August 1917, the Battle of Langemark took place. During that part of the Battle of Passchendaele, fate struck Johann Neumeier. He and his unit were southeast of Zonnebeke. While retreating from the front line, Johann was fatally hit by shrapnel from an artillery volley. The 21-year-old German found his last resting place in the German military cemetery in Langemark.
