My story
Arnold Sanderson was the son of Jane Ann and Thomas William Sanderson. He was born on around 1892 in Darlington, Durham. Before the war Arnold worked as an errand boy and lived in Darlington, Durham. He enlisted in the British army and was part of the 11th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers (68th Brigade, 23rd Division).
Arnold was killed on 14 October 1917 during the Battle of Passchendaele. Two days earlier, his battalion had taken up positions near Reutel, in the right sector of the 68th Brigade's front area. On 13 October, the A Company of the 11th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers came under heavy shelling. In the early morning of 14 October, the shelling moved to the positions of C Company of the battalion.
Arnold’s body was missing for a long time and his name was commemorated at Tyne Cot Memorial. In 2018, nine bodies were found during archaeological excavations on Oude Wervikstraat in Beselare, seven of which could be identified. Among them was Arnold Sanderson, 26 years. Since 2021, he has been buried at Tyne Cot Cemetery.
