My story

Johann Mühlbauer, a former farmhand, was born on 4 june 1898 in Grafing, Ebersberg, Oberbayern, kingdom of Bavaria. He was the son of Rosina Mühlbauerand Jakob Voitl. Johann was called up on November 24th, 1916. Around 1917 Franz served as an infanterist in the 3. Maschinengewehr-Kompagnie, III. Bataillon, Kgl. Bayer. Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 10, dat deel uitmaakte van het 11. Kgl. Bayer. Infanterie-Brigade, van de 5. Kgl. Bayer. Infanterie-Division.

The 5. Kgl. Bayer. Infanterie-Division relieved the 10. Ersatz Division on 10 October 1917 south of Poelkapelle. In the night between 11 and 12 October they moved to a position between Westrosebeke and Roodkruis (south of Oostnieuwkerke). At 6:30 a.m. on 12 October the II. and III. Bataillon moved to the Westrozebeke-Passchendaele road. Between the 20 and 22 October 1917 the 5. Kgl. Bayer. Infanterie-Division was relieved by the 111. Infanterie-Division, moving to Most and Roodkruis in the rear. This division was sent back to the front line on 27 October. That day a Canadian Brigade attacked, but their gains were limited. On the 30th the Canadians attacked Passchendaele. This caused the Kgl. Bayer. Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 10 to retreat to the second defensive line, causing many casualties. They were relieved on the night between 1 and 2 November.

Johann Mühlbauer, aged 19, died of wounds on 30 October 1917. He received an abdominal wound on an unknown date near the Westrozebeke-Passchendaele road and succumbed to these wounds in Reserve-Feldlazarett 112 near Izegem. Infanterist Mühlbauer was buried at Ehrenfriedhof Meenen Wald Nr. 62, which later became Deutscher Soldatenfriedhof Menen. He is buried in plot M, grave 1641.
