Mon histoire
Private Frederick Margrove served in the Royal Fusiliers (City of London) Regiment 11th Battalion part of the 54th Brigade of the 18th (Eastern) Division. He was attached to the 54th Trench Mortars Battery of the 18th Division.
The battery was relocated from France to Flanders on the 24th of September. They moved to forward area at Poperinghe on the 25th and were billeted in Vlamertinghe on the 28th of September. On the 13th of October 1917 the battery marched to the Trois Tours Chateau (which is now called Kasteel De Drie Torens) northwest of Ypres. They were billeted in the chateau area. The battery was to support the 54th Brigade of the 18th Division.
The 18th Division attacked twice on the 12th and the 22nd of October and captured the town of Poelcappelle. But the 54th Brigade didn’t participate in the first attack and was in support during the second attack. As a result some of the men of the Trench Mortar battery were allocated to the 18th Divisional Artillery. It’s possible Private Frederick George Margrove was assigned to “D” battery of the 82nd Brigade Royal Field Artillery of the 18th Division, who was positioned at Von Clarck Cottage, North of Ypres.
The 18th Division was relieved at the frontline in Poelcappelle by the 58th Division on the 25th of October 1917. Yet the 82nd and 83rd Brigade of the 18th Divisional Artillery stayed in position and came under command of the 58th Divisional Artillery. They had to support the efforts of the 58th Division during Second Battle of Passchendaele (26 October-10 November), the final stage of the Third Battle of Ypres. The 58th Division attacked on the 26th of October and resumed their advance on the 30th of October 1917.
The 82nd Brigade Royal Field Artillery put down a 48th hours bombardment in preparation of the attack on the 30th of October 1917. The German front system, strongpoints and communications were unforgivingly shelled during the 28th and 29th of October.
The 58th Division resumed the offensive on the 30th of October with the 82nd artillery Brigade supporting the attack. The artillery Brigade suffered severe losses during the attack on the 30th of October 1917 as they were targeted by the German artillery. The Germans put down severe shell fire including gas shells on the position of the 82nd Brigade.
During the 30th and 31st of October “D” and “B” battery of the 82nd Brigade lost all their officers and a good number of other ranks. It’s possible Private Frederick George Margrove was wounded at Von Clarck Cottage on the 30th of October 1917. He was evacuated to Dozinghem Casualty Clearing Station, near the town of Westvleteren, where he died of his wounds on the 2nd of November 1917. He was buried on the Dozinghem Military Cemetery in Westvleteren.
