Mon histoire

Private Arthur Stanley Riddett was part of the 1st Battalion Devonshire Regiment, 95th Brigade, 5th Division. His battalion took part in the Battle of Broodseinde on 4 October 1917. The 95th Brigade attacked with the 1st Devon’s and 1st Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. The 1st East Surreys were in support and the 12th Gloucesters in reserve . The objective (J17.a.3.3. – J17.c.1.6.), taking the Chateau in the wood, was successfully reached, but they encountered heavy rifle and machine gun fire from Polderhoek Chateau. They were forced to fall back to line J.16.a.5.1. – J.16.c.7.5., giving up most of Chateau Wood, but were able to keep this position despite several enemy counterattacks. Private Arthur Stanley Riddett most likely died during the retreat , which would mean he fell near Polderhoek Chateau.
