Mon histoire

Frederick Russel Sime, a greengrocer from Leyton, Essex, served in the 17th Battalion King’s Royal Rifleman Corps. This battalion was under the command of the 117th Brigade of the 39th Division.

The 17th Battalion relieved the 12th Battalion Royal Sussex in the frontline northeast of Ypres on June 16th 1917. The battalion took up positions in the near Hill Top Farm. They mainly worked on maintaining the trenches. The battalion was relieved on the 24th of June. During the battalion’s time in the frontline, the trenches were heavily shelled.

Rifleman Sime, 29, was one of nine soldiers who, fell while holding the line at Hill Top Farm. He was buried in Vlamerthinge New Military Cemetery.
