Mon histoire
"Killed in Action." While on duty as a signaller, stationed at a "Pill Box" South West of Zonnebeke, to keep in repair the air line from that test box to the liaison officer at Brigade Headquarters shortly after midnight on the night of 6th, 7th November 1917 a large enemy shell made a direct hit on the canvas covered shelter in the rear in the pill box in which he was located. A comrade on duty at another part of the line, on losing communication, went to investigate, but conditions were so disturbed that nothing could be attempted in rain and darkness. In the morning Gunner Renfrew was found dead, and as he was not badly marked, appeared to have been killed by shock. Twenty-eight soldiers who were in the shelter were killed at the same time. Conditions made it unwise to attempt to remove Gunner Renfrew's body and he was buried on the spot where he was killed, a special cross was erected.
