Private Royal Ernest Henry enlisted in the Australian Infantery Force at 20 years of age. The former labourer belonged tot he 39th Battalion, part of the 10th Brigade, 3rd Australian Division.
Roy was single and lived home in the tiny Mallee town of Hopetoun, Victoria.

The 3rd Australian Division joined the British troops in the Battle of Broodseinde, part of the Battle of Passchendaele.
On the 4th October 1917 the 10th Brigade attacked with the 39th Battalion. They were held up by machine-gun fire from pillboxes in the New Zealand Division’s area of the Abraham heights and guns at the Beecham ruins but these were dealt with by the 40th Battalion who were in support. They went on and were forced to storm Hamburg and consolidate.

During these events, private Royal Ernest Henry Mitchell, 22 years of age was previously reported missing but later declared killed in action.
His remains were buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery, plot XXXV, row B, grave 11.

Roy’s younger brother Robert Daniel Mitchell of the 23rd Battalion was killed in the same area the day before, 3rd October 1917, aged 19.
