Mon histoire
Corporal Frederick Furnell lived as fireman with his wife Ellen Hannah and his 2 children in the town of Ascot Vale, Victoria in Australia.
At the age of 29 he enlisted the 15th Australian Light Railway Operational Company of the AIF.
In the second half of 1917 the Company worked at the front in Flanders during the Battle of Passchendaele.
On 19th September Frederick was visiting his younger brother Gilbert James, a lieutenant of the 2nd Pioneers, in the Swan Chateau near Ypres, headquarter of the 2nd Pioneers. They in company with others were having diner in a shack, when a shell struck a tree, exploded and killed 8 of them.
His brother Gilbert lived for four hours, dying in a dressing station, Frederick, 30 years of age, died within 20 minutes.
Corporal Frederick Furnell was buried in the Belgian Corner Cemetery Ypres, Belgium, plot II, row A, grave 7.
