Mon histoire
William James Cameron, a former boilermaker, was born on May 31, 1886 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. On May 3, 1916 he enlisted in Sydney and embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A68 Anchises on August 24, 1916, with the 9th reinforcement of the 30th Battalion, part of the 8th Australian Brigade of the 5th Australian Division.
The 59th and 60th Battalions were withdrawn from the front line near Broodseinde, and the 30th Battalion took their place, with the 70th Brigade (23rd Div.) on the left and the 13th Brigade (4th Australian Division) on the right. The aerial activity was quite extensive.
William James, aged 31, was killed in action on October 11, 1917. Private Cameron was initially buried where he fell, west of Remus Wood (28.D.28.c.90.10). His remains were exhumed and reinterred at Aeroplane Cemetery, Plot 3, Row B, Grave 49.
