Mijn verhaal

Corporal Thomas Mitchell, a young man from Manchester, Lancashire, was killed in action on the 9th of October 1917, in what is known as the Batlle of Poelcapelle. At the time of his death he served in the 2/9th Battalion Manchester Regiment, 198th Brigade, of the 66th Division.

That day, the 66th Division had two objectives ; the first being the Red Line ( which roughly went from Defy Crossing to Waterfields, with Augustus Wood inbetween these two points ) and the second being the Blue Line, with the aim to take over Haalen Copse. The 198th Brigade fought in conjuction with the 197th Brigade ; the 198th positioned on the left and the 197th positioned on the right . Although they didn't reach the Blue line, the division was succesfuly captured the Red Line.

Corporal Thomas Mitchell might have been killed near Augustus Wood while advancing to the Red Line due to heavy German barrages. He is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the Missing.
