Meine Geschichte
Gunner William David Lloyd served in the 37th Battery of the 27th Brigade Royal Field Artillery, part of the 5th Division’s Divisional artillery.
On the 2nd of October 1917 the 27th Brigade Royal Field artillery had to relieve the Divisional artillery of the 5th Australian Division, between Zouave Wood and Maple copse. They were to support the 5th Division, who were to attack Polderhoek Chateau on the 9th of October 1917.
The 37th Battery took up positions in a field just west of Sanctuary Wood, roughly a 1000 yards east of the village of Zillebeke. During the night German airplanes carried out several bombing runs on the Brigade’s wagon lines and its back area. During the whole month of October the German artillery regularly shelled the back and forward area of the 27th Brigade Royal Field artillery.
Gunner William David Lloyd was killed in action on the 2nd of October 1917. He might have been killed, due to German shelling or bombing, near Sanctuary Wood or while going up to the 37th Battery’s position at Sanctuary Wood. He was buried in La Clytte Military Cemetery at Loker.
