Meine Geschichte
Lieutenant Colonel Dudley Ralph Turnbull served in the Gordon Highlanders 2nd Battalion, part of the 20th Brigade, of the 7th Division.
On the 4th of October 1917 the 7th Division had to participate in the Battle of Broodseinde, a phase of the Third Battle of Ypres. They were to advance from positions just northeast of Polygon Wood towards the hamlet of Noordemdhoek and the Beselare-Passchendaele Road on the Broodseinde Ridge. The advance of the 20th Brigade was carried by the Devonshire Regiment 8th Battalion. Once they had captured the first objective, the 2nd Gordons would move through them and capture the 2nd objective.
On the 1st of October the 2nd Gordons moved into a camp on the outskirts of Dikkebusch. After some rest the Battalion moved up to their designated positions in front of Polygon Wood. While occupying their positions Lieutenant Colonel Dudley Ralph Turnbull was killed by a German sniper. He was immediately buried in Buttes New British Cemetery, Polygon Wood.
