Meine Geschichte
Private James Herbert Costelloe, a former farm labourer, served in the 1st Battalion Australian Infantry, which was part of the 1st Australian Infantry Brigade, 1st Australian Division.
On the 5th of November 1917 the 1st Australian Infantry Brigade relieved the 3rd Australian Brigade on the front line. The 1st Australian Infantry Battalion was placed in reserve on Anzac Ridge, with its headquarters at Anzac House. On 7 November the 1st Battalion was improving communications trenches when they were shelled. The War Diary mentions that 5 other ranks were killed between the 5th and the 13th of November. Private James Herbert Costelloe was among them. He was likely killed in the artillery barrage on the 7th of November. His grave was not identified after the war.
