Meine Geschichte

Frederick Ralph George was born in November 1887, in Fremantle, Western Australia. He was the son of Frederick and Eliza George. Frederick worked as a Ship’s Steward until he enlisted in 1916, aged 29. He then served with the Australian Infantry, 28th Battalion, part of the 7th Brigade, of the 2nd Australian Division. He went to the Western Front and was stationed in the Somme before moving to Flanders.

After having seen action during The Battle of the Menin Road, a stage of The Battle of Passchendaele, Frederick’s unit prepared itself for the attack on the Broodseinde Ridge on 4 October 1917. While moving up to the frontline Frederick’s Company stopped for some rest near a Pill-box, named Kit & Kat. Frederick and five others took cover in a shell-hole near Sexton House, when a German shell landed in the shell-hole. Private George, Lance Corporal Gray, Lance Corporal Sheehan and Private Scottie Saddler were killed outright. All four were buried by stretcher bearers in the shell-hole at Sexton House.

Frederick Ralph George was thirty years old. He left behind his wife, Kathleen, and a young son. His remains were exhumed after the war and were interred in Aeroplane Cemetery Plot: II Row: A Grave: 17.
