Meine Geschichte

Before the war Lance Corporal Found Neal worked as a farmer in Goyura, Victoria, Australia where he was born. He was married to Isabella and had 2 children: a son Francis John an a daughter Rita Annie. He was 23 years old when he enlisted in Horsham, Victoria.

Together with his older brother Laurence Daniel, he served in the 39th Battalion A.I.F., part of the 10th Australian Brigade, 3th Australian Division. Starting of as a private, he was appointed Lance Corporal on 22 June 1917.

On 12 October 1917 his battalion took part in the First Battle of Passchendaele, a phase in the Battle of Passchendaele. Throughout the assembly, attack and consolidation they were heavily shelled. Men were ordered to keep going forward but were held up by snipers and machine gun fire. They had to dig in on a line on the south border of Augustus Wood to Waterfields.

It was during these events that Lance Corporal Found Neal was killed in action. As he has no known grave, his name is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial panel 25 N. His older brother, Private Lawrence Found, of the same battalion, was wounded during the action in which Neal was killed. Lawrence suffered a gunshot wound to the head, which caused a depressed fracture to his skull. Severely wounded he was taken to a Casualty Clearing Station and from there to the 11th Stationary Hospital near Rouen (France) where he passed away 11 days after his brother, on the 23 October 1917.

A third and older brother, Private Albert Found, 8th Battalion Light Horse Regiment, married with two children, was returned to Australia a month after the death of his brothers, suffering from debility and heart trouble.
