Meine Geschichte

William McIntyre was a twenty-eight-year-old labourer from Port Melbourne, Australia. On 17 July 1916 he joined the 15th Australian Machine Gun Company, part of the 15th Australian Brigade, 5th Australian Division. He embarked at Melbourne for Europe on 19 September 1916.

On 26 September 1917 the 15th Australian Machine Gun Company took part Battle of Polygon Wood. It was in support of the 15th Australian Infantry Brigade, which was flanked by the 14th Australian Infantry Brigade on the left and the 98th Infantry Brigade on the right.

At 5:50 a.m. the 15th Australian Infantry Brigade attacked together with two sections of the 15th Australian Infantry Brigade. They were able to capture the first objective and twelve machine guns were moved up to consolidate the new front line in Polygon Wood. A German counter attacked on the right flank was attempted but failed and the Australian front line was heavily shelled. The 15th Australian Machine Gun Company stayed in this position until its relief on 30th of September.

On the 26th of September 1917, the war diary of the Machine Gun Company reports two officers wounded, one other rank killed and seven wounded. Private William Mcintyre was killed on that day. His body was not recovered or identified after the war and he’s commemorated at the Tyne Cot Memorial, panel 31A.
