Meine Geschichte
Thomas William Richmond was a thirty-two-year-old brewers labourer form Hunslet, West Yorkshire. On 10 October 1908 he married Martha Littlewood and had three daughters, Ellen, Elisabeth and Lily. He enlisted in Leeds on 11 November 1914 and joined the 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment (Green Howards), part of the 32nd Brigade, 11th (Northern) Division.
By the end of August 1917 the 6th Bn. Yorkshire Regiment took over the frontline east of Langemark, headquarters were at Gournier Farm. A Company was situated at the support line, B Company were in close support to the Duke of Wellington’s and took over a line of trenches north of the Northern bank of the Lekkeboterbeek, C and D Company were in Brigade reserve in Cane Avenue.
On 27 August an attack was launched, No. 1 platoon attacked White House. The platoon came under heavy machine gun fire and only Sgt. Cleary and 6 men reached the objective. Two sections were sent up to reinforce of which only two men arrived. Because the party found itself in danger of being cut off, they withdrew to Pheasant Trench. B Company was send up to reinforce the line. Lt. Howarth, Capt. Derrick and some men went forward, but suffered many casualties due to machine gun fire. Later B Company moved up to reinforce the 8th Bn. Duke of Wellington Regiment and also C Company move up to reinforce the frontline. D Company was used as carrying parties.
Upon relieve on 29 August, the 6th Bn. Yorkshire Regiment suffered 1 officer and 8 soldiers killed, 2 officers and 44 soldiers wounded and 2 soldiers missing. Cpl.
