Meine Geschichte

James Martin, a former miner, was born in July 1894 in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. On July 22, 1916 he enlisted in Melbourne and he embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A9 Shropshire on September 25, 1916, with the 5th reinforcement of the 60th Battalion, part of the 15th Australian Brigade of the 5th Australian Division.

The 15th Brigade was active near Westhoek in October 1917. The 60th Battalion was positioned near the front line on October 15. A daylight patrol from A Company, in conjunction with the 59th Battalion went out to locate the enemy. It advanced 100 yards (approximately 90 meter) when the enemy opened with machine-gun fire.

James, aged 23, was killed in action on October 15, 1917. Private Martin was initially buried where he fell, west of Remus Wood (28.D.28.c.90.20). After the war, his remains were exhumed and reinterred in Aeroplane Cemetery, Plot III, Row C, Grave 40.
